1980 - 1988 Iran-Iraq War: Saddam Hussein ordered the invasion on Iran over a territorial dispute. It turned into an 8-year long war. In 1988 a US warship on patrol mistook an Iranian civilian jetliner for an Iranian F14, killing all passengers on board.
1980 - 1989 Solidarity movement in Poland led to the first free election in communist eastern Europe.
1982 The failing Argentina military regime invaded Falklands Islands to try uniting their country. Britain took it back in 2 months.
1984 Bhopal Disaster in India: Thousands died within hours of the poisonous gas leak from the American Union Carbide factory. When the chairman arrived in India, he was arrested and asked to leave the country for his own safety.

1985 - 1991 Glasnost Transforms the USSR: Gorbachev called for Galsnost or openness. However h was resented by both diehard communists and pro-democracy campaingers. He ended the Afghan war and the Cold War. He won the Nobel Peace Prizze in 1990.
